Dunamancy

The White Storm of Fate

Dunamancy flickers with a Color of Magic of blinding white, a rare, storm-like shimmer that twists the fabric of time and chance. This school is the magic of fate and gravity, bending the flow of moments or the pull of the earth. It’s about slowing a foe’s strike to a crawl, glimpsing alternate paths of what might be, or crushing an enemy under unseen weight. Dunamancy feels otherworldly, restless, its white glow a crackle of possibility and force. It’s for the rare, the seekers of the unknown, those who dare to tug at existence’s threads.

Unlike other schools, Dunamancy offers no minor, at-will tricks—its power begins with deliberate, practiced spells from the Explorer’s Guide to Wildemount. With initial mastery, Gift of Alacrity bathes an ally in pearlescent light, quickening their steps with a borrowed moment. For the skilled, Gravity Sinkhole summons a stark white vortex, dragging foes into a crushing pit. And at its apex, Ravenous Void unleashes a blinding white maelstrom, a black hole that devours all in its grasp, warping reality itself. Dunamancy’s spells range from subtle shifts to cosmic upheavals, all marked by that storm-like white glow, requiring the Wildemount book to wield its full potential.

Player Character Experience

Dunamancy isn’t part of the 2024 core rulebooks—the Player’s Handbook, Dungeon Master’s Guide, or Monster Manual—but comes from the Explorer’s Guide to Wildemount, a 2020 supplement by Critical Role. If you and your DM agree to bring it into your 2024 game, it offers you, as a player character, a rare chance to manipulate time, gravity, and fate with a subtle, storm-like flair. It’s about twisting moments or forces—slowing an enemy’s attack, nudging luck, or crushing with unseen weight. Since the 2024 ruleset is fully compatible with earlier 5e content, you can use its spells from Wildemount seamlessly: start with Fortune’s Favor to tweak chance in your favor with a shimmering white glimmer. For adept casters, Pulse Wave slams foes with a white gravity burst, and at its peak, Reality Break fractures a target’s existence with a dazzling white flash, scattering their mind across possibilities.

This school fits into your experience as an experimental strategist, but only if your DM permits it and you have access to the Explorer’s Guide to Wildemount, available through retailers or D&D Beyond. The 2024 updates, with their expanded subclass options, don’t include Dunamancy natively, but its Wildemount subclasses—like Chronurgist or Graviturgist—can slot in if you track down the book. It’s for players who love rare, powerful mechanics and are willing to pitch it to the table, offering a complex edge if your group’s up for sourcing the material. Without cantrips, its power leans on bigger, deliberate casts rather than small, frequent tricks.

Dungeon Master Experience

As a DM running a 2024 ruleset game, Dunamancy won’t appear in your core books—it’s tucked away in the Explorer’s Guide to Wildemount (2020)—but its spells and features work fine if a player brings it to you, thanks to the ruleset’s backward compatibility. A PC using Pulse Wave might shove your monsters around with a white surge, while Reality Break could disrupt a key encounter with a blinding white rupture, demanding quick adjustments. The 2024 Dungeon Master’s Guide doesn’t address Dunamancy directly, but its general encounter-building tools—like pacing tips or terrain ideas—help you manage its effects, such as countering gravity shifts with fast foes or stable ground. You’ll need the Wildemount book to reference its full rules, available separately from the 2024 core collection.

If you choose to use Dunamancy for NPCs or monsters, it’s an optional way to spice things up. A foe with Fortune’s Favor dodges a critical hit with a white flicker, while a Pulse Wave traps PCs in a bottleneck with a pale white blast—effects you’d pull from Wildemount, not the 2024 Monster Manual. The DMG’s treasure suggestions don’t cover Dunamancy-specific items, but you could adapt a time-warping trinket glowing with a white sheen as a nod to it. It’s a school that asks you to approve its inclusion and track down its source, adding a unique twist if you’re open to it, while the 2024 tools keep your game balanced either way. Its lack of cantrips means its impact starts stronger but lacks the subtle buildup of other schools.
